Rands, ranges, and what moves them

Pricing

What it costs, in rands, before you pick up the phone.

Six shapes of work with real numbers on them. Ranges here, one fixed number after scoping, and an honest conversation about which end of the range you are at.
Build

Six ways this usually starts, priced.

Every package is fixed price once the scope is written down. The range is the honest answer before that, not a negotiating position.

Get a fixed number
Web1 – 2 weeks

Landing page

One page that loads fast, says the right thing and sends the enquiry to your inbox.

R18,000 – R32,000

Fixed price once the sections are agreed

  • One page, up to six sections, designed and built
  • Enquiry form delivered to your inbox with spam protection
  • Analytics, metadata, favicon and social preview images

  • Two weeks of fixes after launch

Best forA product launch, an event, or testing a proposition before building the rest.

Web Development
Web3 – 5 weeks

Five to ten pages with a CMS behind them, so your team publishes without booking a developer.

R48,000 – R95,000

Scoped page by page, quoted as one fixed number

  • Five to ten pages built from a shared component library
  • CMS modelling, editor documentation and a training session
  • Journal or news section with categories and search
  • Technical SEO: sitemap, structured data, canonical URLs, redirects
  • Performance budget enforced in the deploy pipeline
  • Preview environments, so nothing is approved from a screenshot

Best forPractices and businesses whose site is the first thing a serious buyer checks.

Web Development
Commerce6 – 10 weeks

E-commerce storefront

A catalogue, a checkout and a payment gateway that settles into a South African bank account.

R95,000 – R190,000

Depends on catalogue size and how odd the shipping rules are

  • Catalogue, variants, collections and merchandising in a CMS
  • Cart and checkout, tested on real devices and slow connections
  • Payment gateway integration: Payfast, Yoco, Peach or Stripe
  • Shipping rules, delivery estimates and order confirmation emails

  • Launch checklist covering tax, returns policy and consumer notices

Best forBrands selling considered products where lead times and detail matter.

Full-Stack Engineering
Product8 – 16 weeks

Web application

A product with accounts, permissions, data and money moving through it, built to survive its second year.

R150,000 – R360,000

Phased, with a fixed number per phase and a review at each one

  • Domain model, state design and schema with versioned migrations
  • Authentication, roles and permissions
  • Typed API shared between client and server
  • Admin or operations console for the team running it day to day
  • Payments, subscriptions or billing where the product needs them

Full-Stack Engineering
App12 – 20 weeks

Mobile app, iOS and Android

One React Native codebase, two stores, and the unglamorous submission work handled for you.

R220,000 – R480,000

One codebase for both platforms; a single platform is roughly 70% of this

  • React Native and Expo build for iOS and Android from one codebase
  • Native navigation, offline behaviour and sensible loading states
  • Push notifications, deep links and in-app updates
  • Backend API, or integration with the one you already have
  • Crash and performance reporting wired in before launch
  • App Store and Play Store submission, including the review back and forth

Best forProducts people use standing up: field work, bookings, logistics, anything with a camera.

Full-Stack Engineering
Rescue2 weeks

Rescue and takeover

Two weeks to find out what you actually have, stop the bleeding, and price what comes next.

R45,000

Fixed price, fixed scope, credited against a rebuild if you go ahead

  • Written audit of architecture, dependencies, performance and risk
  • Security and access review, including who still has the keys
  • The critical fixes done inside the fortnight, not just listed
  • Findings ranked by what they cost you against what they cost to fix
  • A rebuild or repair recommendation with a number attached
  • Ninety-minute walkthrough with your team

Best forA build that was abandoned, inherited, or is quietly falling over on Fridays.

Performance & Accessibility Audit

All prices exclude VAT. Invoices are in rands, payable by EFT within seven days. International clients are billed in dollars or euros at the spot rate on the invoice date.

Rates

For work that does not fit a package.

Maintenance, exploratory work and emergencies are billed by time. Anything that can be scoped is quoted as a fixed number instead.

Hourly

R850

Small changes and work that genuinely cannot be scoped up front.

Day rate

R6,400

Seven and a half hours, booked in advance. Workshops and sprints.

Monthly retainer

From R28,000

A reserved block of hours each month, three-month minimum.

Production incident

R1,275

Per hour, out of hours. Retainer clients pay nothing extra for this.

Add-ons

Priced separately, because not everyone needs them.

These bolt onto any package. Each one is a fixed price on its own, so you can add or drop it without reopening the whole quote.

Scope

What is in the number, and what is not.

Most unhappy projects start with an assumption nobody wrote down. This is the list that prevents it.

Always included
  • Discovery and scoping, written down before anything is built
  • Design and build by the same person, so nothing is lost in handover
  • Accessibility and performance passes as acceptance criteria
  • Deploy pipeline, preview environments and rollback
  • Written handover and a recorded walkthrough
  • Two weeks of fixes after launch, free
Not included
  • Hosting, domains and third-party subscriptions, which you pay directly
  • Stock photography, illustration and licensed fonts
  • Copywriting beyond editing what you supply
  • Ongoing content updates, unless you take a care plan
  • Paid advertising, SEO retainers and social management
  • Rush work at someone else's deadline, which is quoted separately
Terms

How the money actually moves.

The full version lives in the terms of service. This is the part that affects your cash flow.

Read the terms
  1. 01

    40 / 40 / 20

Forty percent to book the dates, forty at the agreed midpoint, twenty on launch. Nothing is invoiced ahead of work that has not started.

  2. 02

    Fixed scope, fixed number

The quote lists what is included and what is explicitly excluded. If something outside it comes up, it is priced and agreed before anyone starts on it.

  3. 03

    Overruns are mine

If the work takes longer than I estimated and the scope has not changed, that is my problem to carry, not a variation order.

  4. 04

    Everything transfers on final payment

Code, design files, brand artwork and the accounts underneath them. There is no licence to renew and nothing held hostage.

Running costs

Building it is once. Running it is every month.

Hosting, domains, email and the care plan that keeps the thing patched are priced separately, at cost, in accounts you own. All of it is set out on its own page, including a comparison of the hosts worth considering from South Africa.

Questions

The awkward money questions, answered.

If yours is not here, email info@angelmaile.com and you will get a straight answer, usually the same day. More on the questions page.

Because the honest answer before scoping is a range. A five-page site with your copy ready is not the same job as a five-page site that needs a content model, three integrations and two rounds with a board. After the first conversation and a scoping pass you get one fixed number, not a range.

Integrations with systems I do not control, multi-language, complex permissions, migrating data out of something old, and approval chains longer than two people. Each of those is predictable once we name it, which is exactly why scoping happens before pricing.

No. Every price on this page excludes VAT, which is added on the invoice where it applies. Third-party hosting and subscription costs are also quoted before VAT unless the provider bills you in rands with it already included.

Fixed price for anything that can be scoped, which is most projects. Hourly for maintenance, exploratory work and emergencies. A retainer is the middle option, and usually the cheapest way to buy a steady trickle of small changes.

That is already how it works: three payments across the engagement rather than one at the end. Longer builds are phased into monthly milestones, each with its own number and its own review.

No discount, and no equity. What I will do instead is cut scope until the number fits the budget, which is more honest and leaves you with something shippable rather than half of everything.

No. Hosting sits in accounts you own and you pay the provider directly, at cost, with no markup from me. Running costs and what I charge to keep the thing healthy are set out on the hosting page.

Thirty days, and the dates it reserves are held for fourteen. After that the work still happens, but the calendar may have moved.

ContactBooking from next quarter

Tell me the budget and I will tell you what fits inside it.

A number is not a commitment, it is a constraint, and it makes the first conversation far more useful. Send the shape of the problem and roughly what you have to spend, and you will get an honest view on whether they meet.
